Richard Watson MD

Meet Dr. Watson, a highly-trained retina specialist who brings a wealth of experience and compassion to every patient he treats. With a commitment to providing the highest standard of care possible, Dr. Watson treats every patient as if they were his own family, ensuring they receive the treatment he himself would want.

 

After spending several years as a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School and treating patients at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Dr. Watson relocated to the Birmingham area in 2020 to be closer to his wife's hometown. During his time in New England, Dr. Watson also volunteered at a Veterans Affairs Hospital, providing free care to the brave veterans who served our country. 

 

Dr. Watson embarked on his academic journey at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he was awarded a merit-based scholarship. He won an engineering design competition during his junior year and went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering before pursuing his passion for medicine. He subsequently obtained his medical degree from the Tulane School of Medicine, completed his ophthalmology residency at the same institution, and then pursued a fellowship in Retinal Surgery at West Virginia University. During this fellowship, he honed his expertise in treating complex retinal disorders and gained valuable experience in the field.

 

As a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Vit Buckle Society, Dr. Watson is at the forefront of his field and uses the latest techniques and technologies to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients. He has completed all phases of board certification and is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. This title is only given to doctors and surgeons who demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and experience necessary to to deliver high standards of patient care. Dr. Watson has helped train other doctors in retinal surgery, and various videos of Dr. Watson's surgeries have been presented at national conferences.
